How to Estimate Your Pool Pump's Actual Energy Cost
Most homeowners can name their internet bill to the dollar and have no idea what their pool pump costs to run, which is usually the biggest single electrical load in the backyard. The Woodlands Township Covenants require Design Review Committee approval for pool and backyard construction in nearly every village, and that review covers fencing, setbacks, and drainage as well as the pool itself.

The Basic Math
Running watts (from the pump's nameplate or spec sheet) times hours run per day, divided by 1,000, gives kWh per day; multiplied by your utility's rate per kWh gives a daily cost, multiply by 30 for a monthly estimate. A single-speed 1.5 HP pump running 8 hours a day can easily cost several times what a variable-speed pump set to a lower daily-average speed costs for the same circulation task.
Why the Estimate Is Usually Conservative
This math assumes the pump runs at its rated wattage the whole time; a variable-speed pump programmed to run most hours at a lower speed (and only ramp up for specific tasks) uses meaningfully less than the nameplate-wattage estimate would suggest, which is part of why the real-world savings from upgrading often beat back-of-envelope expectations.
